Growth and Maturity
Growth and Maturity: These Insights take you further down the road from startup, when the business looks as though it will survive, though you the founder, now have new ideas about the next stages. Maybe some of the finance you were able to get at the outset needs supplementing. There are certainly sources that were not open to you as a fledgling business. There is a wider range of collaboration and support available from organizations and people.
In a more steady state, the business is established and may have new horizons to explore and you, the founder or founders have a wider range of interests to pursue. If the enterprise if to continue to flourish, it may be in a different way or indeed, maybe even without you. This is something I gave not a moment of thought about at the beginning of my journey. I wish at least, possibilities had been at the back of my head.
After 11 years of creating, building and making profitable my principal business, with a great team of people, I felt I needed something different and guess I was a bit tired. After many trials and errors, including mergers, selling to an associated business on an ‘earn-out’, my co-founder and I decided to sell the business to the 30 or so people who had helped to build it—for a symbolic £1 sterling (it was a UK business). Since you, also are pursuing the building of a startup with purpose beyond dollars and cents, you need to know that there are many ways of moving on. Here you will find some of them.
